My Final presentation

Overall I think I would have a successful small sale theater and pitched a fair idea . What I thought worked really well as the Idea of getting Amnesty International as my sponsor. They work with companies such as Equity and also link really well into the play 'Someone who'll watch over me' story of 3 wrongfully imprisoned men. Furthermore I though this would  give them great opportunity to raise awareness and raise money for their charity . What I think I needed to improve was my understanding of the budget form and how it worked I would of liked to be more confident on the profits I would make . Also I think I needed to be more realistic with my budget as i set my self a low one of £1,000. However I thought my presentation was good and I conveyed my ideas clearly and showed that they where well thought out and researched.

Unit 1 Drama 3rd Durrington evaluation

What adaptions have we made to accomadate the performance space and timings for Durrington ?
The room was alot smaller and cramped compared to our theatre space . To make adaptions in songs we stood in a cresent formation so the audience who all be able to see our faces . This also meant we had better oppertuinty to project and have a clear focus point . Also Santa Fe was quite close together but we magnaged to still still make it look effective . Also if there wasnt enough room to do our chair duets we would just proffesionally carry on with our stylised pedestrian movement .

What is the audience reaction?
The audience reaction was what I expected they found parts funny for example " they say I have the best ass.." in light my candle. They looked serious and kept silent in one song glory , becuase james successfully made the song very depressing yet powerful.

What do we want them to understand from our performnace and the songs ?
We want them to get a sence of the poverty the charcters live in and the dreams they have . Also we would like to see who's in a relationship with who and a little over view of the character .

Reflection of the performance (worthing high)

I think my perfoemance went well generlly in the ensombles and my main song Santa Fe . I projected well in the enviroment of a small class room and had good engaging facial expression to reflext the emtions in the songs . Santa Fe went really well every one did well on their chair duets considering thr space . Also I think I did well to no let my nerves get the better of me . I was clear , loud and confident . My interaction with the charcters in the train was good and sper of the moment , it gave the piece diversity . The only thing I feel that didn't go well was the last lines "do you know the way to Santa Fe ?"
I didn't take a big enough breath and I was out of breath anyway so those lryics weren't as clear as I would of liked them to be and I went really low in key it didn't sound right . To improve that I will remember to take a big breath bfore those lines .

4th December Drama songs in the flat

Songs all based in Mark and Rogers flat;

Page 1- Tune up 1
Page 3- Tne up 2
Page 6- Rent
Page 11- Tune up 3
Page 11- One song
Page 12 - Light my candle
Page 17- today for you
Page 19 - you'll see boys
Page 25- life support
Page 28 - another day
Page 57 - Happy new year B
Page 65- seasons of love B
Page 74 - what you own

What I'd like to work on in the opening song Rent as well as it needing to be alot more chaotic and busy , I'd like some attenchion on both Collins and Joann . For example when Joann has her dialouge on the phone I think all the chaos on the stage should either slow down into 'slow-motion' or freeze completely . That gives a chance for Jonna to have a podium to really show facial expression and characterisation.
In addition to that I'd like to work on the scene where Collins is betan up . I think we need an organised sequence to get from one side of the stage to the other , we can work on this work Kat . We could have group of people surronding Collins and miming kicking and punching , someone could steal his coat and even push him to the ground . This could happen in the middele of the stage to help Collins be seen as its an important part of the context and how gay people where treated on the streets .
This could then give an excuse for someone on the side as a homeless person to get on stage and help Collins to upstage where Angel finds him.

For today for you tomorrow for me I think there needs to be alot more intereaction with Mark , Collins and Roger . I think Mark and Roger could be congratulating and teasing Collins when Angel is dancing and singing . Also I think Mark and Roger need to make more of a fuss on what Collins is bringing them (the food , bree , ciggarettes ect) . Futhermore I think Mark can be even more suprised and happy at Collins arrivel .
In addition to this I think Angel can teas the boys more as she is parading around the living room .

What I'd also like to work on is the little bit of dialouge Collins has before La Vie Boheme .

RENT OVERVIEW

RENT The Musical
By; Alex W

Rock Opera
The Plot
This rock opera based on Pucini's La Boheme ,tells the story of one year in the life of a group of bohemians struggling with poverty , unemployment and money  in modern day East Village New York. The story centers around Mark a film maker and Roger a musican and song writer , two roommates. While the tragedy of loosing his girlfriend to suicide Roger is numb to life. Mark tries to capture it through his attempts to make a film. In the year that follows, the group deals with love, loss, AIDS, and modern day life in a truly powerful and boheminan story.

I play the part of Tom Collins the life of the party  , a gay computer-age philosipher who lectures at a university . He is fired by the head of the university for his Boheminan views that he preaches to the university students. He suffers from A.I.DS and often does the occasinal drug here and there. When he is on the way to his old room mates appartment he is betean up for the fact that he is gay . He meets a charcter called Angel who is a gay drag queen , she helps him back to health and becomes part of the alphabet city gang . Sadly Collins looses Angel to A.I.DS before her time. She showed the group love and kindness and picked Collins up from a very dark place in his life . He dosen't let her death stop him , if she tought him anything its to carry on in life happy and with love . He gets a new job and has the compassion and kindess of his friends who will always be there for him.

Self evaluation

Things to improve
  •  Dialouge/vocal sung performances
  •  characterisation in Today for you tomorrow for me
  • Dance performance
How I can improve them
  • I could work on maintaning my accent - In I'll cover you reprise  ; the deep voice and low notes
  • My movement in today for you tomorrow for me could be spaced more appropreatly and I think Collins needs more interaction with Mark and Roger in the flat when Angel is dancing
  • I  feel as though I could be more confident with the dance pharses , so I will rehears and practise them

19th Drama uit 1

Today we covered 'good bye love' and 'I'll cover you' the reprise . It was benficial for me to do I'll cover you with the rest of the cast becuase it helped be with the tune and speed of the song. Also it was helpful to do it with everyone so I could get a sense of how it would actually sound in the performance. Futhermore it awlays helps to see how Ashley interprits the songs because we can see the differnce between how we portray emotion through our personas.
All I think we need to do with the song now is block the lay out and proxemics , and get a good idea of how we ca use the stage space affectively.
My target to improve nex time would be to really belt out the lyrics 'but sweet kisses I've got to spare , I'll be there and I'll cover you' these are personally very hard lyrics for me to sing with out going to low or going out of character and being to high with the notes.

20th November Filming the scenes

We are creating a mini movie to show on a projector in the show of Rent of the lives of the characters over a year . Mark is the creator of the film in rent  but we have all helped and contributed and tried to make the movie look spontaneous and natural to represent different periods of time over a year . I think this mini film is really needed to give the play a reflective mood and to also show Marks success .It enthasizes the lives of the characters and gives the audience a window to look through into their lives .  We went to different areas of the college to show a variety of back grounds and settings . We played our characters and our off cast characters to for example I played a homeless person in a number of different environments.

Myself as an off cast extra - Homeless person.
Luke Scattergoods scheduled for the filming.

13th drama unit 1

In todays rehearsal we started blocking happy new year part B . I still feel that I'm not so confident with happy new year so I need to devoted more time into leaning the timing of this song. Also I feel that we need direct spaces to go to , we need a purpose on stage to help us get into the song and feel comfortable in the space with a direction to use.

We then did a speed run of act 2 with both casts . I think this was beneficial  for myself when I'm off cast . I know where my entrances and exits are .The fist impressions I get of act 2 is that the mood has changed with dramatic tension, relationships have changed Joanne and Maureen have broken up , Roger and Mimi are on bad terms and Angel is in very poor help. The 2nd act is a real drop in emotions and pace compare to blossoming love in act 1 and new found relationships and events.
In act 2 alot happens for my character Collins , he looses the love of his life . Angel passes away and Collins is now going to deal with life without her and grieve. Also all of his friend around him are arguning and Roger is moving away . Just as the devastating news of Angel passing on , Collins has no support from his friends . He has to battle this alone.

Friday 13th November Dance Park Bench evaluation

Today our stimuli was a poem called Park Bench . We had to work in groups to create a piece that echoed the lyrics of our poem. Park Bench was about one man and his lift that revolved around this park bench . We focus on the relationships he had within the poem and the story within it . Myself and Luke represented the man and his relationships when hew was young while bryleah and max represented them when they where old. We did this by having to benched next to each other to show the past and present.  Myself and Luke focused on certain stanzas to portray the young couple.  A creative idea  that I brought to the piece was that Bryleah and Max walk off stage together looking old and weak and myself and Luke would walk off stage and slowly become old by hunching my back and curling low into myself. To represent what we interpreted as his wife or lovers death after we where decreasing in height and posture I curled up into a ball on the floor in the  fetal position as Luke walked off .

In our performance I think myself and Luke's chair duet to represent relationships was successful and looked neat and well executed . Also I think we portrayed the emotions in the poem to a passionate standard by keeping a strong extension and a focused eye line .

To improve and develop the dance I think we could interact with Bryleah and Max and maybe we could do a chair duet phrase in unison. We could even swap partners so I could work
with  Max  and Luke could work with bryeah to add diversity to the piece .

Here is our piece.

Calling theatres

Here's my self made script when calling theatres to ask questions and quotes;

Hello there my name is Isabel King ,

I'm a musical theatre student from Worthing college , currently working on a performing arts business course on how to run a small scale theatre company and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind answering some theoretical research questions?
I would like to know how many seats The Theatre  holds?
Is it possible to use your lighting and sound facilities?
If that would come with any short of deposit?
Would you take a percentage from our profit?
And would you be able to give us any dates to run our production?

Thank you for your time in this matter , your quotes will be use as research.

Chichester Festival theatre - gave me an email to contact sain.dewied@cst.org.uk

Connaught Worthing theatres - I got through to admin 01903 231 799 who said they where too busy to answer any questions and gave me and email to contact ; theatres@audr/worthing.gov.uk here's the information they sent me ;

  • "The Connaught Theatre holds 520 seats, this includes boxes and Wheelchair and escort spaces.
  • It is possible to use the facilities, we have technical staff to do this or help to do this. If you were putting a show on you may have to hire the technicians at an extra charge, depending on what you require.
  • To hire the venue there is a deposit of £200 to secure the venue on the date you require.
  • There are 2 ways to put on a show at our venues. One is to hire the venue for a set fee and extra costs that may include include staffing and equipment etc. If you sell tickets through us the charges come out of the box office takings after the show through a settlement, or we invoice for the charges if we don't sell your tickets. The other way is called a split where we take a percentage of your box office takings after the show through a different type of settlement. The percentage is discussed at contract stage.
  • We hold a diary in the administration Department and we consult that at the time of enquiry, pencil in dates until all is confirmed, either by deposit or contract signing, then it is confirmed as a booking. If you have any dates in mind we don't mind checking the diary."

I didn't find my phone calls that successful because I only received emails and other numbers to call  to enquire. Therefore I wasn't that impressed with the information I got .

I learnt from my first call that you don't always get forwarded to the right to person so you must be patient and take down suggestions they make to help you .

My small scale company shall adapt to possibly have an admin manager who will contact all the relevant people to find out the answers to our questions . This will consist of emailing every theatre we want to run or production at , this will then save time.

6th November unit 1 act 1 sing through

In the rehearsal we decide as a class that we would like to work with kim and do a whole run through of act 1 songs . Personally I thought it was uselful because I learnt what songs I have really picked up and know well . Also I leant what songs really need practise ! I came up with some notes on what I need to practise in act 1
  • We'll see - I need to go over the key of how I'm singing this song as I feel I'm singing in too much of a high key . I need to find a comfortable range . We also need to rehears the last part of the song where it just involves myself , angel , roger and Mark .
  • Life support - I meed to listen to this song and get an understanding of the timing.
  • Another day- I think I could benefit from a rehearsal with Mark , mimi and angel for the last few verses of this song .
  • Christmas bells - the tune and timing needs to be looked at , a rehearal with Ashely may help me with this song as we can work togther and collaborate .
  • La vie bohem- I have some lines with Maureen that we both need to visit togther as we need to dance while singing which can be a challenge .

12th November unit 1

In today's rehearls we worked on the song 'Happy new year" which is the second song in act 2 scene 1. I think this is a cheery song that is meant to bring the audiences attention and excitement back up after an interval . Also it is important because it shows how time is passed . In a musical or play time sift often happens in the second half of the play to relate to the audiences absence from sitting and spectating . I feel as though the vibe in this song is hopeful and prosperous . Everyone is excited about the new year starting and is hoping that this will be a good year for them , when new relationships are found and ended . It is a chance to move forward . I feel as though Collins is very comfortable with angel and is happy involving her in his and has excepted love into his life . Also I feel though she has a massively positive role in his life , she picks him up and they bounce off eachothers personas well, because they are both about living in the present .

In the first half of the rehearsal we worked on timing in the song with Kim. The song is challenging because everyone has a certain beat to fit their lyrics in . For example Collins has 4 beats to count that is instrumental before he comes in with the line "Bond. James Bond." This line is also meant to be comical as he is dressed in a suit like 007 ! My target for this song is to listen to the music and it's rhythm . Hopefully then I will have a clear understanding of the beats , tune and timing for my lines .

For 'happy new year' Collins is dressed as James Bond . For this scene I think I will try to get a white shirt , black blazer and a clip on bow tie . Maybe for trousers I can just wear black Jeans or leggings as I will have to make a quick costume change . Also I think I should the shoes very casual . I might wear my vans or some trainers as I would like to keep that 'common' , ' casual' side of Collins showing . It brings out his personality and adds some playful comedy to an ironic smart James bond which is the complete opposite of Collins charter .

In the second half we blocked for happy new year . We have decide that Mark , roger , Mimi , murine and Joann will be gathered around the door to the apartment waiting for myself and max to arrive . We arrive in the middle of the stage on my line 'bond James bond' everyone one then rushes over , loving our costumes . Angel then walks over to the door breaks the bolts and we all walk into the apartment to find it empty . Meanwhile there is activity happening around us on the streets . Groups of drug dealers walking around and homeless hanging around .

Drama unit 1 23rd October BLOCKING benny scene

My Target after todays blocking session - To have a strong direct travel sequence for I'll cover you and you'll see .
Today myself ,Luke, Max , James and Rachel talked about what should be happening in the flat when benny arrives as we want the joyful and energetic mood to be dropped by Bennys arrival .

We have set ourselves some stage directions in our scripts . For example I came up with the idea that we should be eating some takeaway food - to show how a group of friends are hanging out and being social . I also want to show how this is how they live in these times . They can afford plates or cutlery so they have to eat out of the boxes with plastic forks and spoons .

Mark: "you broke your word - this is absurd " - (attention to betty/ benny level 5)
Benny/ betty : " there is one way you wont have to pay " - (6)
Roger  :"Knew it!"-(7)
Benny/Betty:"Nextdoor the home of cyberarts you see.." - ( continue eating takeaway on coach with disappointed expression)

we also discussed how the lighting with be set up around the 'apartment' .
PHOTO UPLOADING SOON .

Drama 5th November unit 1 self review

Act one self review notes

  • I feel confident with the opening song Rent.
  • You ok honey ? - Feel confident with lyrics , however I think we need to be more specially aware and devise some key movements.
  • Santa Fe  I really enjoy singing but we need to improve the movement on the train and choreograph some solid dance movement that we can link with key lyrics .
  • Today for you - timing needs to be improved and become because more confident with lyrics .
  • I'll cover you- I feel confident with we just need to become confident with blocking and travelling across the stage and I need to work on the reprise with Kim .

Songs we need to learn next as a class
  • I should tell you
  • over the moon
  • La vie boheme
In the second part of the lesson we learnt the song Christmas bells and sung it to the piano with Kim . I found the timing quite hard and all over the place . Its quite fast in some places however I find the timing really challenging in my lines " you don't have to do this" and " I do not deserve you, Angel Give-Give- All you do/ is give  Give me some way to show How much you've touched me so". To improve I need to listen to the timing of the music and maybe mark on my script where I need to break , speed up or slow down.
Also once we are confident on the timing and the lyrics we need to devise some blocking as in this song it is a busy street scene. I think groups should travel and sing together . For example the 'junkies' , 'homeless' and the 'cops' should stick together and rotate the stage back to back . I think this could look quite effect as the people they are reacting to or singing to circle them in an outer rotation to give an imposing , territorial tone to match the lyrics.

Dance evaluation 23rd October Guernica

1. What was the stimulus for the piece ?
Guernica a painting by Pablo picasso repressing the bombing of a little spanish town called Guernica.
2.How did you create movement material to communicate the theme/stimulus?
For example in the dance I used a lot of crouching , hiding and low to the ground moves . One move I had myself in a small ball I the floor reaching out , this was to syimbolize how people may of been taking cover when the him hit but still reacting out for the help of their loved ones .
3. What was your contribution ?
My contribution to the peice was a smooth movement myself and luke where involved in . We both rolled into the same movement in canon to show a domino effect that my happen in a disaster . Also my contribution was my idea that involved contact with eachother . It was to all group around kim and move in a Heat beat motion around her in almost a big hug position .
4. How did you use your phyisical skills in the performance ?
In the performance I used extension to show panic through out my body that someone in a bombing disaster my experience longing for safety or the hand of their loved ones . Also my posture was strong and straight to show the determination to survive within the dance.
5. strength / weakness ?
I think my ideas and  solo movemnets where effective and relevant to the stimulus . Also I think my timing with the music was good and has improved . They way I interacted with others was strong aswell. To improve I think I need to be more graceful within my movements and become faster when travelling .
6. Target ?
My target is to become faster when traveling throught the dance as I don't want to fall behind in timing with my team  , also I'd like to become more graceful when portraying these movements especially as they represent a serious stimuli . maybe i need to improve on my balance to become more graceful .

Here is the link to our finale piece

Drama unit 1 16th September notes

  • I need to bring in light bulb tea lights to see how effective the will be are in what area of our street they belong .

Today we did a full run through to 'out tonight' . I felt confident without the script , there's still room to improve but I think I did well on remembering lines and lyrics . We need to focus on transitions between scenes . My suggestions is that we take a long rout across the stage or cross over the stage weving in and out of eachother to enthasize that fact that our setting is a busy down town street .
We have also decided that during out tonight the life support group will be frozen whist mimi is singing . I think this is effective when showing how everyone has different things going on in their lives at different times and life can be so differnt .
For you ok honey I think that angel could be dabbing Collins keen with a tissue and wrapping him in bandages whilst singing you ok honey . This will add depth to the scene and coinside with the lyrics . And give Collins something solid to react to .

Dance unit 50 16th October

we where looking at a stimulus of Pablo Picasso Guernica . It is a painting that represents  the bombing of the little Spanish them of Guernica . In groups we had to make a piece that represented the painting Guernica by using some moves Kat had tought us and our own pieces . Here are some word stimuli that helped us create a semantic field of panic within represented in the painting.

  • Chaos
  • Madness
  • Destruction
  • Panic
  • Horror
  • Anguish
  • Fear
  • Terror
After showing our prices to the class this was my feed back ...
What went well :
  • Timing was good with the music
  • Facial expressions
  • My focus within eyeline
  • There was varied formation
  • Repition
Even better if ..
Our timing with eachother was more precise .
And our running needed to be more dramatic .

Drama 8th September

In todays rehearsal we had a brief run through of act one .
I think that I'm confident with my lines in the opening song Rent and my characterisation is good . When im singing the lines 'how do you stay on your feet when on every stree it's trick or treat' I look out to the audience and around the space whistle stumbling around and holding my stomache in pain .  I think this is effective because this scene takes part just after Collins is betan up . He's still in pain and I feel it's important to portray this through the line so the audience can see what day to day life is like for gay people in rough parts of New York in the late 80's not just Collins . However this also leads into 'you ok honey?' Where angel discover Collins and comes to his aid .
Also I'm pleased with how confident I am with santa fe , I have picked it up well and found a comfortable key to sing it in. To improve Santa fe myself and max and Kat still need to work on some movement around the train and the performers as I feel it's still messy . Also I'm happy that I feel confident with 'today for you tomorrow for me' but I feel that stage wondering is agaig messy . I think we should choreograph some movement and interactive between Collins , Mark and Roger in the flat to make that scene look less random and more interesting .

What I want to improve and understand

  • Enterances & exits
  • Space awareness
  • Choreograph Collins getting betan up
  • Interaction with Mark and Roger
  • Life support interaction
Rehearsal with max , luke and James Wednesday 11am

Small scale theatre production- Budget and tour plan

My theatre company name      ; The Luuvie's Theatre company
The play I would like to tour    ;Someone who'll watch over me  - cast of 3

Here's where I plan to tour Someone who'll watch over me;

Brighton - Theatre Royal
Chichester - Festival Theatre
London - Old Vic
Horsham - Capital
Worthing - Pavillion
Bexhill- Del warr Pavillion

These are very big venues so I may need to reconsider my tour plan or my budget .

Here's a list of my team;

Director - Isabel king
Costume/set/prop - Luke Scattergood
Producer - Jess Hill
Runner- Max paul
Use theatres tec team

This is how much I plan to use on the show , when budgeting it is important to be realistic especially when dealing with money.
 Budget; £1,000- sponsors
I would like to get sponsder by amnesty international as there charity is all about freeing wrongly imprisoned inmates. This reflects really well on the plays story and this would also raise awareness for the charity .

Budget form
Here is my budget form which calculates income I will make and also money I may loose out on. You have to fill it out all by predictions on how much you think you will spend or make and it will calculate my predictions so I will have an understanding of what short of profit i will make.

Someone Who'll Watch Over Me

profiles of theatre production roles

Box Office
The job of a box office worker is to sell tickets of upcoming and present running shows to the public over the counter, phone or the internet they work during the day and early evening. They have to report the the front of house manager. I myself have worked in a box office for my work experience and I really enjoyed talking to the public and finding days to see show that suited them best.

Producer
The producers job is  finding the money to finance a show and being responsible to prevent financial risks. They will also find the performers and a team who will create and run the show. If a theatre is not producing its own show, then an independent producer or production company will be responsible. What I find interesting about this job is the process of finding a cast and team. They are the top boss no one has power above them .

Artistic Director
The Artistic director creates  the artistic vision of a show  and often the overall vision  to be presented by the theatre.  When the production opens or goes on tour, the director is responsible for  passes their instructions to the stage manager or deputy who writes and edits the script  along with the prompts and cues for the performers as well as lighting, sound and scene changes and  last-minute changes or revisions.I find this job really interesting because they get to make all the creative and imaginative ideas as well as the final decisions . They make a production their own . The board of directors is usually the team the artistic director works with and concurs with . The producer has the final say overall. To be an artistic director you have to have worked with advertising and have a talent for seeing beyond a plan photo or image . You have to think outside the box and see the bigger picture.

What other roles interest me ...
There are many non- performance roles in theatre . For example makeup artists, lighting , sound , set , costume etc.
One I would be particularly interested in would be a casting director . A casting director is someone who holds the auditions for parts in a production and make judgments on who should play what character . This is interesting to me because I think you need to have an artistic vision and an open creative mind . It can be a challenging job and indecisive. However I think it shows a keen knowledge and passion for productions after all the actors bring the play or production to life . To be the person that finds the talent and link in the actor and character must not only be fun but exciting . Also you would be able to meet lots of very different people every day. You may even work with well known actors and actresses .

Dance 9th October La Vie Bohem

In this dance rehearsal we had a run through of La Vie Bohem and recognised what our weak points where within the dance and what our strong points where . I think my strong points have been working with Sophie on the little duets we perform together. And my characterisation of Collins when dancing . What I need to work on is travelling in time and also the multi task of singing and dancing . In my opinion I have developed as a dancer in La Vie Bohme and I think the energy of the song helps my character portray his views . To develop the dance I think myself and max as Collins and Angel should have a strong positions with a humorous element for the line 'Brothers'.

We also showed Kat our work with the chair duets .And she helped myself and Max with some movements we could incorporate into our dance . For example we had some turns , skipping and swaying with each other.
WWW; My interaction with mark and roger improved as I feels as though we where missing that interaction at first and also my confidence with the lyrics is improving .
EBI; If Angles and Collin's movement was neater . Also I think Collins needs more attitude in his actions.
My target is to rehears with Max to create a neat dance routine for Santa Fe with devised actions and movements.

Unit 1 8th October Chair Duets and Santa Fe

Today we looked into the technique of chair duets . I worked with Sax and Amber in a trio for a devised chair phrase . We had 18 counts to create different actions around the chairs and every movement had a count. This meant we had to be fast and sharp within our movements to stay in time and look neat. The purpose of this was to create a duet (or trio) for the train in Santa Fe .
We then staged the train in a diagonal line across the stage. I thought this was an effective train with the chairs facing each other . Also I thought the possibility of the chairs duets had a lot of potential to look effective. In my opinion to have all the duets happening at once was too busy and messy and also took focus away from the connection Collins has with Mark , Roger and mostly Angel in Santa Fe . This song is a passionate song about how they want to get away from being judged and city life and irrelevant opinions and how they want a peaceful  , relaxed life . My suggestion is that 2 duets are performing the phrases on one side and one group are performing on the other side. When the groups are waiting to perform they should do pedestrian style movements , keeping it simple from 3-5 different actions.  Then swap over so the other groups get to perform their duets. Also I think  a great way to bring an interactive element to the audience . When people are waiting to get on the train they could be waiting in the audience as if the seating space was the stations platform.

What I found challenging in this rehearsal was performing the song and then also dancing in the narrow space with max. To improve I think we could work with Kat to create some solid 'spontaneous' movements to use on the train . This would help because then we could associate lyrics with certain dance moves and vice versa.

Dance unit 50 2nd october evaluation rent

We watched our performance of Rent and evaluated it.

What Went Well ?
My timing with the music was good , I have become alot faster and also my memory of the dance has improved . My extension was strong and looked professional. Also I am pleased with my characterisation and how I'm portraying it within my movements.

Even Better If

It would be even better if I could make my movements bigger and more exaggerated . Also it would be good if my extension improved slightly this would help me bring Collins strong personality out.

Evaluation  of La Vie Boheme

www;   My timing was good with the music and my lift with Sophie looks really good as well.

EBI;  To improve I could get abit faster within the dance and get alot more confident with the lyrics.

Drama unit 1 25th september

At the start of this Lesson we did a speed run through the 2nd act of Rent . I found it challenging because its hard to sum up key events quickly and decide what elements are the most important  however I did find it very helpful . I feel as though I have a better understanding of the order of the scenes in the 2nd act . Also I have a better understanding of the order of the songs which really help me understand the overall pattern and order of the plot. Furthermore I gained an understanding of how much Collins loves his friends and relies on them to make him happy through life especially when times are tough for example his love Angels death. In addition to that I gained an understanding of how quickly Collins life changes in 2 years  from losing his job , to meeting angel , to her death to getting a new job and moving forward in life. This has helped me understand Collins love for the people around him and his strength and willingness to do well.   He grows strong as a person . He can endure being beaten by gangs and yet still find good in the world. He finds his love angle and to loosing her .Collins lives life as though every day is his last .

INSERT PHOTO OF STAGE LAYOUT

We have decided to have our stage in the lay out in Immersive , this means we incorporate the audience into our performance space. Futhermore this means we will breaking the 4th wall .

Also we have been assigned to work with the relevant people for a solid hour working on songs we are not that confident with . Ashley , Max and Myself have arranged to meet Wednesday 11-12 to g over songs we find challenging.

Dance unit 50 25th september

We watched our opening scene during the song rent to see what went well and also what we could improve . I think we had some strong movements but we needed to change them up and show diversity . Also that stage look empty . We when through what we had already choreographed in our phrase groups (Luke , Kim and Myself ) . From there we integrated a another group to show interaction on the stress and also to make the stage look busy and show that there was a lot of activity on the streets , especially in gangs . We started to work with Sophie's  group to make one big group fight. From there we disperse together while other groups perform their phrase . Occasionally myself and Luke would meet in the back ground of the stage and interact to make fill up empty space on the stage and to make it look even more active . After that Luke and myself had to make our own duet phrase ( as did everyone) I thought we have some really interesting actions , our dynamics like extension where really strong and loom aggressive . To work on our duet phrase I think we need to be more aware of the space we have and extend our jump and kick to make it look bigger and more impressive . Overall as a class of the end position  we need to make our poses bigger and become more in time with the music .

HOMEWORK TASK 18th

Whats the difference between HIV and AIDS ?

REFERENCE;http://www.healthline.com/health/hiv-aids/hiv-vs-aids#Overview1

HIV is the virus that can then develop into AIDS. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The name describes the virus its self: it infects humans only and it attacks the immune system, rendering it deficient and unable to work as effectively as it should.

Unlike many other viruses such as the common cold , our immune systems are unable to attack and completely clear out HIV. However medical research as increased increasing the life span of those with HIV and AIDS . AIDS stands for  Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.AIDS develops when HIV has really broken down the immune system. Symptoms of AIDS is not being able to fight the infections that AIDS brings on such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, certain types of cancer, and other infections.
HIV virus is transmitted from one person to another through the exchange of bodily fluids.  Common infection occurs when HIV is transmitted through unprotected sex or through  contaminated needles. Less commonly, you can become infected with HIV through a tainted blood transfusion or a mother can pass the infection to her child during pregnancy. HIV does not always come with recognizable symptoms . It usually brings on flu like symptoms for 2-4 weeks after you have been infected by HIV. The immune system can fight off these flu like symptoms for years but cant get rid of the HIV infection . Once HIV has developed into AIDS all flu like symptoms and other symptoms will take effect and break down the immune system making the carrier feel extremely  unwell . HIV can be tested by a simple blood test that is then taken to a lab to be looked at. You can get tested for HIV in your local surgery or sexual health clinic . AIDS is tested through cell counts . When a carrier has low T cells they are consider to have developed AIDS .

Starving artist
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starving_artist
A  Starving artist is an artist who puts their work before their own well being . They make sacrifices in order to focus on their profession. They stereotypically live on low income this could be due to lack of business or because  they are putting all their earnings into their projects.

Homelessness
http://england.shelter.org.uk/campaigns/why_we_campaign/tackling_homelessness/What_causes_homelessness
Homelessness can be caused by many factors . Usually it is down to the persons own background history and situations . It could be because their friends and family cant afford to accommodate them , relationships break down leaving people besides themselves and losing failure to maintain or find a job.
  • unemployment
  • poverty
  • a lack of affordable housing
  • housing policies
  • the structure and administration of housing benefit
  • wider policy developments, such as the closure of long-stay psychiatric hospitals.
  • Prison
  • Drugs
  • Gambling
For a lot of homeless people, there's no single event that results in sudden homelessness.  Homelessness is more then likely due  to a number of unresolved problems building up over time .

Unit 1 characterisation and production roles 18 th sep

I have been assigned the production role of costume and set. I will need a picture of the layout of the stage space . I will also need to create a list of the character as use inspiration  from the film the script , stage directions and videos of Rent productions to put together what costumes will fit the characters.

Also this lesson we watched a high school production of Rent . This was to gain an idea of how other actors portray our charters . I will play the part of Collins. Collins is in love with Angel a transvestite and they both struggle through life every day knowing they have aids. Collins is great friends with Mark , Roger , Murine and used to be friends with Benny. He lived with Mark and Roger for a while after be fired as a university lecturer for having views that where 'wrong' and  to bohemian .

Here is me talking about my views and thoughts on Collins.

Collins

18 th sep dance

Today we discussed what order of steps you need to follow to create a successful dance piece ;

  • Chose a stimuli
  • Research
  • Improvise and experiment
  • Add in any choreographic devises
  • Select and refine
  • Climax
  • Clear structure
Refining your movements means you need to think about your dynamics , your performance space , timing with each other and music.
We had ago at using some pulls and pushing movements to create a short phrase. I went with Luke , we made a phrase the involved a squat , two pushing motions a lean and even balancing movements. This meant we really had to trust each others strength . Then we incorporated these moments into the dance we have been learning for rent . My partner is Ashley so we came up with a little phrase that we will count after every one has to go through their partners legs.

We made some really good moves , for example we have a moment when we do a little ball room style dancing with eachother. Also our squats and turns look effect and strong. Also or timing is good but I do think we need to become faster within the dance. That would be our target (become faster with dynamics).

unit3 researching drama schools and courses

Here are some images from a presentation I made about researching drama schools and what courses they offer to students . I researched into 4 Drama schools and looked at courses I thought would be appropriate to suit me and what interested me about them .

For example I am looking to apply to Royal Central school of speech and drama . Also I would like to apply to Rose Buford, GSA and possibly Northbook Uni and ABU.

At Royal Central their BA (Hons) Degree in acting really appeals to me. Here is a quote from Central giving their overview of the course "A comprehensive classical and contemporary actor training, this demanding course nurtures students through a life-changing journey, in which they are challenged to achieve their full potential as actors and acquire skills for working in the full range of acting contexts."
http://www.cssd.ac.uk/course/acting-ba
What I like the sound of in this course is the fact that they focus on classical and contemporary plays and training. Personally I like contemporary plays as they often focus on real like issues and subjects . I feel as though I can connect with a character that has a real life issues as i may myself find the issues easy to relate to . I may have tackled a circumstance that is similar to the character
therefore I find it more enjoyable to portray in a character .Also because i am a English lit/lang student I have knowledge of analysing texts from plays and I feel with would help seeing as i'm researching texts from plays in a creative and analytical way.

I also have looked into the BA (Hons) Acting course at Rose Bruford . What interests me about this course is that really point out that is course is very vocational and practical . This appeals to me as I find it easier to convey my ideas vocally rather then by writing. Also they they grab your attention by saying how they will train you in all aspects of the PA industry . I feel that I would benifit from this course as I am very open to working in all areas from Television to the stage . You need to be open to anything in this industry and you have to be ready to challenge yourself and learn something new. I have never been taught how to act in front of a camera or in a recording studio and that really excites me, to think I will be learning new and modern skills.

In addition to this I have look into the GSA BA (Hons) Acting Degree. What I think would be suitable for me in this course is how they like to train you and integrate students into an emsumble environment. It's always important to be able to work with anyone in the PA industry and it sounds like a very intense course which is really just giving preparation for the industry when your on your own. Also what interests me about this course is the practitioners they use . There are new names I've never heard of and new styles of acting to train with and explore.   This would be very beneficial for me as I feel that I need to explore new styles of acting, new styles that would make me stand out and bring out skills that I would of developed .

Furthermore I have looked into acting courses in universities . For example one university I really looked into was AUB. Again what I though was suitable about this course was that fact that they used classical and contemporary texts which are my favorite types of plays (especially contemporary). However they also mentioned that you work with the rest of the university for example make up and costume. What I really liked about this is that it would give you a feel of the industry . You would be constantly working with lots of different people and having to communicate all the time therefore giving you great confidence and preparation for later in life. Again this is an important skill if you want to work in the PA industry .

evaluation of Rent audition

Overall I feel as though I did well in my audition and under pressure . I prepared well in order to portray the emotion in the song 'out tonight' . I  knew all the lines and felt confident that I could move about the stage to bring the audition to life.
I feel as though my west side story song wasn't as good because I stopped on the third verse where I fell nerves got to me. I feel that I could of been a lot calmer before my audition as I think I panicked myself on how my voice sounded during the song and that put me off.
The preparation and research I did on the characters Mimi and Anita really helped me when singing their songs. I felt that I knew the key mannerisms  of the characters so that really helped when portraying emotions in the song . Also I felt that  I portrayed Anitas accent well when singing 'a boy like that'. To improve I think I  could invested more time into 'a boy like that' because it would of helped me get back  on track when I stopped because of nerves .
I really think the whole audition in general will help me in further life because it gives me experience in different aspects of the audition process . Also it gives me confidence in myself and builds my self esteem up when singing in front of  people  . Furthermore I can learn from this and know what to do next time.

Unit 18 auditions

We discussed  proffesionalisum in auditions and how it can help you make an impression.

  • You should always stay calm
  • You should be polite to everyone
  • Always responded positively
  • Be punctual
  • Prepare your self by learning song / script
  • Have good upright posture
  • Deliver what is asked of you
  • Never be negative
  • Having a willing to learn
  • Respect for other performers
  • Be ready to do your part straight away with no 'minuet to compose yourself'

Here's some audition questions I came up with to prepare myself underperssure .
What do you think you can bring to the production ?
What character do you see yourself as and why ?
What do you know about the production ?
What past expirence have you had ?
What would you like to gain from the production ?
What do you think the main themes of the play are ?

These questions will get you prepared for what they may ask you . It's important to have researched the part you are auditioning for as it shows character understanding and intelligence for the production . Also by following the auditions tips it will help you to remain calm and appare professional in front of directors and casting directors .

Unit 1 entrance to rent 11th sep

Today in the theatre we worked on an enterance to Rent . The opening scene is et out side on the streets of down town New York . We got back into our groups of 3 (Luke , Kim and myself) and put our sholl of fish phyisical theatre phases into the enterance along with the music . We also adapted and change our phrase slightly . For example we had to run through our movements 2 times across and around the space . So on the first time around we based our movements around the centre of the stage and outsides near where the audiaunce will be sitting . On the second time we went in the opposite direction to perform to the other side of the stage . We also change one of our kick moves to a single jump kick . Myself and Luke will hold Kim under her arms and swing her forward while she jumps and kicks out whilst we are holding her . This adds diversity to our piece .

Over all I think we have great energy within our piece and have adapted well to the music I'm the opening Scene . Also I think the changes we have made to our phrase looks a lot more interesting and diverse. To improve our opening I think we can exaggerate our actions and make them look a lot bigger and sharper . As a class I think more of us can be on the stage at one time to fill up the stage and make it look more active .

We also watched the entercne from the film Rent to get some ideas on how to improve and Change our dance. I think the enterance would look good with high up set to make the entercne look bigger . Also I think the idea of every one at different levels throwing paper would look really effective .

11th September Movement in performance

Today we discussed what Stimulus means and its importance in dance . Stimulus is a starting point or an idea that you develop.
You can have all shorts of stimulus for example ;

  • Visual ; Film , colour, photographs, shape
  • Auditory; music, sound, rhythm, dynamics
  • Theme ; convey idea or story , message
  • Text ; scripts, poetry , news, literature
Q; what text based stimuli have you used before in drama/musical theatre?

In musical theatre I used stage directions (text based stimulus) to understand how my character the 'witch' in 'Into The Woods ' moved . This helped me get an understanding how her personality and mannerisms just by the way she held herself.

Also in dance today our stimulus was a visual stimuli. We watched the scene from Rent where they sing the song La ve Bohem . We then started to compose the beginnings of the dance . We start sitting on a run way of chairs facing each other and end up with a partner dancing around the chairs which is meant to represent the table at the restaurant  they sing la ve bohem .

Movement 10th of september

We have learnt to use a technique called sholl of fish . This is where you closely group togther , this is a type of physical theatre . This can create the effect of  aggression , protection a force. We experimented with the idea of a gang as this is relivent to Rent and West Side Story as there is the jets and the Sharks in wss and Rent is set in down town New York where it's likely that there is gangs hanging around with nothing better to do . I worked with Luke and Kim within the sholl of fish . We then had to come up with 8 moves .We had some jumps , pushing movements and intimidating poses. We then had to create a physical theatre motif inspired by parole  , intimidation and attack. As a class we performed them one after the other to aggressive music . I think ours had some really good movements for example the leg kick was a great attack movement it showed alot of aggression and also looked intimidating . However I think  the structure of the piece could of been neater and sharper to create more of an impact.

10th of September first Lesson Auditions

Today we made notes on how auditions work in the industry. The difference between an audition and casting is that casting is where you go straight to reading through the script with other actors . For example johnny Deep wouldn't  do an audition because his work is recognized in other films as he is a successful actor. An auditions is when you not a well known actor and they need to see your acting skills for the first time.
We then made some key notes.
  • You start the audition from the moment you enter the building showing good posture , a confident persona and a keen willing to learn .
  • For an open audition you should turn up about 3 hours early to secure a place to audition.
  • When waiting for your audition you should scan a script to fit in that final preparation and familiarisation  with you character.
  • You should always be prepared to improvise so they can gain an understanding on how you work on the spot.
  • You should always wear appropriate clothing to an audition  , for example neutral (black) works well because they can then find it easier to picture you as the character.
  • You should research the part and background of what your auditioning for . For example research the script the casting director and company .
  • You should be very clear on your own availability.
Why did you choose your audition songs?
For Rent I have chosen Out Tonight which is sung by Mimi. And for west side story I have chosen A Boy Like That . I think these songs are very similar in comparison as they are both sassy, wild  and aggressive. They tell alot about the character , for example Mimi is a confident , exotic dancer with alot of passion and attitude. And Anitia is a strong ,loud women who is a leader figure for Maria .
I think these song suit my voice as they are comfortably within my range. Also my voice is powerful and suited to attitude rather then long drawn out high notes . The other options where Will You Light My Candle from rent and Somewhere from West Side Story and these songs are soft , elegant and have a high range.

Evaluation Jamie Cullum everything you didn't do

On the 22nd of May (the last day of term) my class and the other musical theatre class performed our onsumble of Jaime Cullums 'Everthing you didn't do' in the Sealight Theatre . I think overall we sounded really powerful and passionate . To warm up for the song we practised an octave scale starting at different notes each time getting higher and higher and also practising low notes. This song is particularly challenging with in articulation . For example in the last verse the line  'everything you didn't do ' is repeated 4 times in a higher key . I was singing in a harmonie with the people designated to the harmonie where as others had to sing the melody (lower key) . This was very challenging as I would have to use my head voice it was very high in comparison to the rest of the song. Also I found breath control very challenging in this song as most of it was in a sacarto style , unlike the last verse which was done in lagarto  ' I don't know what say about every little thing , cos I'm tired and I want to go to sleep' . There was a lot of jumping so I'd also say we had to use our flexibility within this song aswell. However I think my projection was good and strong and gave a good contribution to the onsomble . My targets for next time would be to work on the articulation in the song as sometimes I felt my voice going very squeaky with how high I had to change to . And also my volume could of been louder but was effected because of the high notes in the song that I struggled with .
